SUBJECT: Return to Campus: Information for Resuming Instruction

To All Faculty,

As we resume instruction on Monday, I’d like to highlight a few key points for faculty, staff, associate deans, directors, department chairs, and associate chairs.

  1. Class Coverage: Department chairs, please take time on Monday and Tuesday to check on all scheduled classes to ensure faculty can deliver instruction, whether in-person or remotely. Some faculty may still be unable to reach campus or may not have internet access. If a faculty member cannot deliver instruction, please develop an alternative plan for continuity, such as assigning a substitute or an alternative assignment.
  2. Student Support: Be mindful of students who may struggle to engage in instruction due to power or internet outages. Many of our programs are delivered online, and some students may be living in areas more significantly affected by the hurricane. Please be as considerate and flexible as possible.
  3. Facility Checks: Not all offices and rooms have been inspected by facilities, so there may be damage, water leaks, or other issues that need attention. Report any issues to facilities as soon as possible. If these issues affect instruction, coordinate with your dean and my office for support.
  4. Instructional Hours: I am working with USG and SACSCOC to secure approval for using a couple of final exam days and “alternative instruction modes” to meet our federal and state instructional hour requirements without extending the term or using Thanksgiving break.
  5. Community Impact: As we resume, please be considerate of the efforts made to reopen our campuses and the ongoing challenges faced by staff who were impacted by the storm.

I want to extend my gratitude for your dedication and resilience in adapting to the disruptions caused by the hurricane. I also want to acknowledge those of you who volunteered to assist our community in its time of need. The character of our Georgia Southern community shines brightly in times like these, and it’s been a testament to our strength.

Thank you for all that you do.

Sincerely,

Carl
