July 1, 2021: July Update

Dear Faculty,

I hope your summer is going well and that you’re enjoying some well-deserved time off, spending time with loved ones, and pursuing your research, scholarship, and creative activities. The Provost’s Office has been busy preparing for the Fall term. As the USG mentioned in May, we anticipate returning to pre-COVID expectations and conditions for the Fall. Our office will provide details on expectations, policies, and scheduling later this month.

New Dean at the College of Education

It is my pleasure to welcome Dr. Sharon Subreenduth to campus. Today marks the beginning of her appointment as Dean of the College of Education. Dr. Subreenduth brings a strong and diverse track record of accomplishments and experiences as an administrator, researcher, educator, and community collaborator. She comes to us from the University of Massachusetts, Lowell, where she was the Associate Dean (for Academic Affairs, Research & Graduate Studies) and full professor in the College of Education. I look forward to working with her to move the College of Education and Georgia Southern University forward. Please join me in welcoming her to the university.

I also want to thank Interim Dean Amy Heaston, who is retiring after 30 years of service to Georgia Southern University and Armstrong State University. We wish her well.

Transitions

In bittersweet news, Dr. Christine Ludowise has announced that she will be retiring as of July 31. Since 2017, Dr. Ludowise has been an invaluable member of the Provost Leadership team, serving as Associate Provost for Student Success and Advising. Dr. Ludowise joined the faculty at Georgia Southern University in 1999 as an Assistant Professor in the (then) Department of Political Science, and she taught courses in criminal justice, political science, public administration, and first-year. From 2010-2017, she served as the Associate Dean for the College of Liberal Arts & Social Sciences from 2010 – 2017.

A gifted teacher, she received CLASS AWARDs for Excellence in Teaching in 2002 and 2010, an Excellence in Contributions to Instruction award in 2010, and the American Political Science Association & Pi Sigma Alpha Outstanding Teaching in Political Science award in 2010.

Her accomplishments in the Provost’s Office have been numerous. Some of the initiatives she’s been involved with or led while in the Provost’s Office include: the completion of College Georgia and related student success initiatives; Momentum Year/Momentum Approach and related student success initiatives; implementation of EAB SSC Navigate, EAB Academic Planning Solutions (APS), EAB Academic Planning, Ad Astra Astra Schedule, Ad Astra Monitor, Align & Predict, Ad Astra Momentum Year Dashboard.

We will greatly miss Dr. Ludowise’s leadership and dedication in helping our students and her colleagues succeed. Best wishes to her in this new and exciting phase of life.

Soon we will launch a search for Dr. Ludowise’s successor. Dr. Dustin Anderson will serve as the Interim Associate Provost for Student Success and Advising.

Sincerely,

Carl L. Reiber

Provost & Vice President Academic Affairs
