June 8, 2021: Juneteenth Activities

Dear Faculty,

Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day, is the annual holiday that celebrates the emancipation of enslaved Black people in the United States. There are several Juneteenth activities happening on and around campus this year. In case you haven’t heard about them, we’ve compiled a list of some of the activities below. We hope you can attend one and celebrate.

Georgia Southern Center for Africana Studies: Live on the Armstrong Campus

June 19

3:30 p.m. – 5:30 p.m. 

Activities include the Saltwata Players, a Lesson on Quilting, Poetry, Sankofa African Dance Troupe, and Jamal Toure’s African Spirit.

Georgia Southern Alumni Relations: Zoom Gullah Geechee Cooking Class, taught by Master Chef Benjamin Dennis

5:30 p.m. on Zoom.  The class can also be viewed on the Armstrong Campus in Solms Hall, Room 110

The campaign highlights contributions of African American leaders, past, present, and future in academic fields, especially those who are faculty, staff, students, and alumni of Georgia Southern.

·        African Art Exhibit at The Guard House – June 19 & 20, 12:00 noon – 8:00 p.m.

·        Art Festival at Tybee Pier & Pavilion – June 19 & 20, 12:00 noon – 8:00 p.m.

Bulloch County NAACP Soccer

Local teams participate at 2704 Old Register Road in Statesboro.
