The Country: Japan
Japan is an island nation in the Pacific Ocean with dense cities, imperial palaces, mountainous national parks and thousands of shrines and temples. Shinkansen bullet trains connect the main islands of Kyushu (with Okinawa’s subtropical beaches), Honshu (home to Tokyo and Hiroshima’s atomic-bomb memorial) and Hokkaido (famous for skiing). Tokyo, the capital, is known for skyscrapers, shopping and pop culture.
The City: Kyoto
With a population of nearly 1.5 million, Kyoto is the former capital of Japan. Along with many famous shrines, temples, and traditional wooden houses, Kyoto offers a wealth of recreational activities and a wide range of cultural attractions. Natives of the city take pride in their customs and traditions, which come alive especially on their many holidays and festivals.
Classes
You will be enrolled in six (6) credit hours of lower or upper division courses and will do a series of assignments, both orally and in writing, for your Georgia Southern professor. Additionally, as part of your immersion experience, each morning, Monday-Friday, in small groups, you will spend four hours practicing your language skills with native speakers who are trained in teaching their language to foreigners.
Partner Language School
Kyoto International Academy in Kyoto, Japan. The Kyoto International Academy was established in 1987 and is located in the northern part of Kyoto, a quiet residential area where many students live. The school was given a Class A superior rating for its traditional and academic achievements by the Osaka Immigration Bureau.
Excursions and Cultural Activities
Visit many famous places in Kyoto and nearby regions including Hiroshima.
Program Cost and Eligibility
Travel Documents
All participants need a valid passport to enter Japan. Please secure the passport as soon as possible. Medical and liability documents will be provided by the Study Abroad Office for each participant to complete prior to departure. International health insurance is included in the programs fees and is required by Georgia Southern.
Transient Students
Students from other accredited universities are invited to enroll in our Study Abroad programs. In order to receive credit at their home institutions, however, they must enroll as transient students at Georgia Southern for the summer.
