Model Arab League

The Model Arab League (MAL) is a simulation of the Arab League – an international organization of 22 Arab countries. Students who participate in Model Arab League learn how to impersonate diplomats, deliver public speeches, negotiate and debate, write various position papers and resolutions. The topics of debate vary from year to year, while the entire Model Arab League is organized and supported by a DC-based national organization: the National Council on US-Arab Relations (NCUSAR). See https://ncusar.org/ and more specifically https://ncusar.org/modelarableague/

The Georgia Southern Model Arab League club has been in existence since 2015. It is a student-led organization, advised by two Faculty Members: Youssef Salhi, instructor of Arabic at the Modern Languages Department, and Jacek Lubecki, professor of political science and international relations at the Department of Political Science and International Studies (POINTS). Students in the club meet weekly or biweekly to practice debate and prepare for specific simulations. Georgia Southern University has its own Model Arab League simulation put together by our students. This simulation is Savannah Model Arab League (SVMAL) – see https://ncusar.org/modelarableague/conferences/svmal/, and it takes place in October. The students also participate in Appalachian Regional  Model Arab League (ARMAL) in November: see https://ncusar.org/modelarableague/conferences/armal/. Finally, since 2020 our students have participated in the National University Model Arab League (NUMAL) in March.

The Model Arab League is the best opportunity at Georgia Southern to learn about the Middle East, practice debate and develop high-level diplomatic skills such as public speaking, fast writing, debate and collaboration. Model Arab League events are fun and engaging. If you have interest in the Middle East and want to work for a government or a business in connection with the Middle East, Model Arab League is the thing to do at Georgia Southern University.
