Master of Science in Civil Engineering (MSCE)
Format: In person on the Statesboro Campus
Credit Hours: 30
Entry Terms: Fall, Spring, Summer
Ready for State of the Art in Civil Engineering
There’s one thing civil engineering pioneers have in common. They’re the ones flooded with experience. Drenched in tech. They have the tools to design solutions, initiate processes and create infrastructure. They’re masters in state of the art…not just state of the practice.
Are you ready for the next level?
The Master of Science in Civil Engineering (MSCE) program at Georgia Southern University prepares you for the diverse and technology-driven world of infrastructure. We’re serious about getting your hands on the latest technology — in the classroom and in the lab. You’ll work on public impact research and projects that solve real infrastructure problems, and you’ll work with the latest engineering tech to get it done.
With a focus on hands-on experience, the MSCE degree will equip you with industry-ready skills coupled with innovative and cutting-edge research knowledge within your individual field of interest. Taught by a faculty consisting mostly of professional engineers, you’ll get the training you need to hit the ground running.
Ready to Apply?
Or, you can:
Choose a Thesis (research) or Non-Thesis (project) Track from Five Areas:
Construction Engineering
As a construction engineer, you’ll learn advanced analysis and design, project planning, scheduling and management of large-scale construction projects. You’ll gain the skills to be an invaluable player in the construction of residential, commercial, and heavy civil projects such as roadways, bridges, ports, and more.
Environmental/Water Resources Engineering
As an environmental/water resources engineer, you’re working with our most precious resource for life on earth. You’ll solve current, relevant, real-world problems that affect water quality and sustainability. Learn about drinking water and wastewater treatment, surface water management, watershed management, and more.
Transportation-Pavement/Geotechnical Engineering
In this track, you’ll examine the characteristics of soil, rock and asphalt materials as well as the design and construction of pavement, foundation and other earth structures. You’ll have the opportunity to research green and sustainable pavement materials, geotechnical load and resistance factor design (LRFD), ground improvement, and traffic safety simulation.
Structural Engineering
As a structural engineer, you’ll analyze and design large-scale infrastructure. Study resistance factor design (LRFD) of reinforced concrete and steel structures, and repair and rehabilitation of civilian infrastructure. You’ll also explore emerging technologies such as fiber-reinforced polymeric structures and forensic analysis tools such as non-destructive testing.
Surveying-Geomatics
Learn to navigate the geospatial world by using large geographical information systems, LiDAR, enhanced photogrammetry, advanced global positioning systems and other emerging technologies. This track prepares you for cutting edge surveying and geomatics and delivers the necessary coursework required for Professional Surveying Licensure in the State of Georgia.
MSCE Degree Highlights and Benefits
- Our program boasts a large number of courses with a lab component.
- We collaborate with areas, institutions and infrastructure in southeast Georgia to perform real-world field studies and research.
- Students get hands-on experience with high-end, current technologies in the lab and in the classroom.
- Our smaller class sizes allow a more personalized learning experience for students.
- Most of our civil engineering faculty have their Professional Engineering license, which means they’re ready to work or consult on large-scale projects, and ready to mentor students.
Our mission is to make sure you’re ready to enter the world of infrastructure as a leader. Ready to dig in from day one. Ready to solve problems. Ready to build.
You’ll Work With the Latest Technology in Civil Engineering
Do you want to work in non-destructive testing? How about laser scanning equipment, ultrasonic pulse velocity, or a fully automatic consolidometer? We’ll make sure you’re ready to hit the ground running with the expertise you’ll need to build the next era of infrastructure for towns and cities around the world.
- Non-destructive testing (NDT) and corrosion labs
- 2nd generation adenosine triphosphate (ATP) for quantifying biofilm in bioreactors
- Gas chromatography/mass spectrum (GC-MS) emerging contaminants detection
- Triaxial shear testing
- Water potential meter for unsaturated soils
- Atomic force microscopy
- Cyclic corrosion testing chamber capable of simulating different corrosive environments
- The latest geographical information systems (GIS) software
- Drone-aerial photogrammetry
- And much more!

More MSCE Degree Options
Accelerated Bachelor’s to Master’s Degree
For students who earned a bachelor’s in civil engineering degree, Georgia Southern offers an accelerated track to an M.S. in Civil Engineering degree. This program combines 124 hours from the B.S. in Civil Engineering and 30 hours from the MSCE to exceed the required 150 unique hours between the undergraduate and graduate degree programs, and allows students a maximum of 9 shared credit hours to satisfy the requirements of both. The option is available for both the thesis and non-thesis MSCE tracks.
Provisional MSCE Admittance
For bachelor’s students wanting to pursue an MSCE degree without a civil engineering, construction engineering, construction management or environmental engineering background, they may be granted provisional admission based upon the recommendation of the MSCE Graduate Coordinator or department chair.
