Undergraduate Research

Innovate. Discover. Make an Impact.

The Allen E. Paulson College of Engineering & Computing Office of Undergraduate Research (OUR) is the primary resource for  faculty and undergraduate students who wish to engage in research.  Most of the College’s faculty members, and all of its tenure-track faculty, not only engage in research but also encourage their students to participate so you can apply what you learn in the classroom to real-world applications in cutting-edge research topics.

The College offers three primary ways for undergraduate students to participate in laboratory research.  One is our annual Undergraduate Research Awards, for which proposals are solicited in the fall semester, and for which the Dean awards funds primarily for supplies and materials.  Two is our annual Student Research Symposium, at which all College students are encouraged to present their work in research to industry representatives and professionals.  Some Symposium projects may be funded by industry, and a panel of judges awards significant prizes to the most impressive presentation.  Finally, many faculty direct working research laboratories in which students conduct research — you are encouraged to talk with any professor whose work you find interesting.

Go to the Faculty Research Interests page to see what our professors are researching right now!

Why Get Involved in Research?

Engaging in undergraduate research offers invaluable academic and professional benefits, including:

  • Explore career fields.
  • Experience one-on-one mentorship with faculty.
  • Develop critical-thinking, problem-solving, and creativity skills.
  • Work independently or in a team.
  • Consider interdisciplinary collaboration.
  • Understand hypothesis-driven, evidence-based learning.
  • Network with business & industry professionals.
  • Compete for research awards.

What is Research?

Research is the systematic collection of information on a particular subject that will establish facts and reach new conclusions. Research can be performed in ANY discipline.

You should look at research opportunities if you:

  • Are academically motivated in any discipline.
  • Want to develop professional, technical skills that give you an advantage in your future career.
  • Are curious about original research/creative activities on campus.
