Diagnostic Medical Sonography Degree Concentration

Program Goal: To prepare competent entry-level general sonographers in cognitive (knowledge), psychomotor (skills) and affective (behavior) learning domains for the following concentrations:

  •  Abdomen-Extended
  • Obstetrics & Gynecology

The diagnostic medical sonography concentration will train you in the latest sonographic technology and prepare you to enter a growing career field as a certified sonographer.

Using sound waves to examine organs, muscles and vascular structures, sonographers perform everything from obstetrics imaging to cardiac imaging. Your coursework will cover everything from clinical settings, scanning techniques, invasive procedures and sonography specialties.

Students are required to complete clinical education courses at two or more distant clinical education centers. Students are responsible for travel and lodging expenses associated with attending these centers.

Professional Licensure

The Department of Clinical Sciences anticipates that graduates of this program will seek the following professional state licenses or national certifications: Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer (RDMS).

The Department of Clinical Sciences has determined the required classes and educational activities of this academic program will qualify a graduate of this program to take the ARDMS Sonography Assessments for RDMS certification. The department has not determined whether this program satisfies the requirements of all states and territories for the RDMS certification and state licensure. After completing the Bachelor of Science in Radiologic Sciences with a concentration in the sonography program at Georgia Southern University, you are eligible to seek the following national professional certification or state licensure: Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer, (RDMS), and sonographer licensure.

The required classes and educational activities of this academic program will qualify a graduate of this program to take the ARDMS Sonography Assessments for RDMS certification.
