Georgia Conference on Information Literacy scheduled for Oct. 6-7

Information literacy is the art and science of locating, evaluating and using pertinent information to answer a question or solve a problem.

The Georgia Conference on Information Literacy is a yearly event that strives to promote greater understanding of information literacy among librarians, educators and students.

The third annual conference will be held at the Coastal Georgia Center in Savannah on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 6 and 7.

A joint venture of Georgia Southern University and South University, the conference will bring together an international assortment of educators, librarians and media specialists from K-12 schools and universities who represent a variety of disciplines.

The conference will feature presentations and hands-on workshops that address the many facets of information literacy. The keynote addresses will be delivered by Betsy Barefoot and Mike Hall.

Barefoot is the co-director and senior scholar at the Policy Center on the First Year of College. Hall is the deputy superintendent of instructional technology in the Office of Instructional Technology and Media for the Georgia Department of Education.

People who have a valid Georgia Teaching Certificate or Paraprofessional License, and people who are working toward the Paraprofessional License, will have the opportunity to earn Professional Learning Units at the conference.

The Georgia Southern entities involved in the conference are the Zach S. Henderson Library, the Department of Writing and Linguistics in the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences, the College of Education, and the Continuing Education Center.

The early registration fee for the conference is $100 per person. The fee will increase to $125 per person after Monday, Sept. 18.
