Pilobolus Dance Theatre will appear at Performing Arts Center on Sept. 9

One of the most unique and influential dance troupes in the world is coming to the Performing Arts Center (PAC) at Georgia Southern University.

The Pilobolus Dance Theatre will perform at the PAC on Saturday, Sept. 9, at 7:30 p.m.

Known for its startling mix of humor and invention, Pilobolus boasts a unique weight-sharing approach to dancing that is as powerful as it is non-traditional.

Tickets for the Pilobolus Dance Theatre are $32 plus tax per person for the general public. Georgia Southern faculty, staff and students will receive a 10 percent discount. Groups of 15 or more people from outside the University community are also eligible for a 10 percent discount.

In addition, if any tickets are available 10 minutes prior to the scheduled start of the performance, any Georgia Southern student with a valid University I.D. can purchase one ticket for $10 plus tax.

The Pilobolus Dance Theatre takes its name from a sun-loving fungus that grows in barnyards and pastures. When it ripens, the sporangium blasts off with incredible force, reaching an amazing 45 mph in the first millimeter of flight.

Formed at Dartmouth College in 1971, the dance troupe has exploded with a burst of energy that has garnered international acclaim. Its current tour will take it to cities across the U.S., including Chicago, New York and Washington, D.C. Pilobolus is also scheduled to perform in Chile, France and Germany within the next year.

The Pilobolus performance at Georgia Southern is expected to feature dance numbers titled ‘Memento Mori” and ‘Prism.”

A male-female duet, ‘Memento Mori” is a sweet and hilarious reminder that life is short. It shines a warm light into the depths of fantasies of growing older  and perhaps a bit wiser. The music ranges from Debussy’s hauntingly undulating melodies, to the ethereal sounds of Bjork, to Florence Foster Jenkins’ notorious butchering of the ‘Queen of the Night” aria.

Meanwhile, ‘Prism” is a contemplation of a question: how does one maintain their identity in a group? Three men and one woman seek the answer in a sleek, urban world of film noire mystery, where dancers disappear into darkness and then reemerge in pools of light. This lyrical work pulsates to the music of Coldplay.

The PAC is located on the Georgia Southern campus at the corner of Chandler Road and Plant Drive. The box office is open every Tuesday through Friday from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m.
