“Jesus Christ Superstar” at Performing Arts Center on Oct. 31

‘Jesus Christ Superstar,” the groundbreaking theatrical masterpiece by the legendary writing team of Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice, is coming to the Performing Arts Center (PAC) at Georgia Southern University on Tuesday, Oct. 31, at 7:30 p.m.

Set in two acts, ‘Jesus Christ Superstar” tells the story of the final seven days in the life of Jesus of Nazareth. The musical dramatizes Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem, the unrest caused by his preaching and popularity, his betrayal by Judas, his trial before Pontius Pilate, and his ultimate crucifixion.

As relevant and timeless as ever, ‘Jesus Christ Superstar” is perhaps more potent in today’s troubled times than when it was first produced in 1971.

The rock opera vision of ‘the greatest story ever told” features Ted Neeley as Jesus. In addition to starring in the title role on Broadway and touring stages, he received Golden Globe nominations for Best Actor and Best Newcomer for his portrayal of Jesus in the Norman Jewison film ‘Jesus Christ Superstar.”

The production also features Corey Glover as Judas. Glover is best-known as the lead singer for the platinum-selling and Grammy Award-winning band Living Colour. In addition, he has appeared in numerous motion pictures, including the classic Vietnam movie ‘Platoon.”

Tickets for ‘Jesus Christ Superstar” are $45 plus tax per person for the general public. Georgia Southern faculty, staff and students will receive a 10 percent discount.

People from outside the University community are also eligible for a 10 percent discount.

In addition, if any tickets are available 10 minutes prior to the scheduled start of the performance, any Georgia Southern student with a valid University I.D. can purchase one ticket for $10 plus tax.

‘Jesus Christ Superstar” was the first collaboration between Webber and Rice to be performed on the professional stage, and it remains one of the most popular and enduring works ever created for musical theatre.

‘Jesus Christ Superstar” opened on Broadway in October of 1971. The first tour began in June of 1972 with Neeley in the title role. He also starred in the motion picture version, which was shot on location in Israel in 1973.

The London production of ‘Jesus Christ Superstar” opened in August of 1972 and ran for eight years and 3,358 performances, making it the longest-running musical in West End history.

Nominated for five Tony Awards, ‘Jesus Christ Superstar” features a number of memorable songs, including ‘Superstar,” ‘Everything’s Alright” and ‘I Don’t Know How to Love Him.”

The production is directed by Dallett Norris, who is known for his work on ‘Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat,” ‘Can-Can” and ‘South Pacific.”

The PAC is located on the Georgia Southern campus at the corner of Chandler Road and Plant Drive. The box office is open every Tuesday through Friday from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. The box office is also open one hour prior to the start of each performance.
