Leadership Week Jan. 29-Feb. 2

The Office of Student Leadership will host Leadership Week Monday, Jan. 29, through Friday, Feb. 2.

‘The goal of Leadership Week is to introduce concepts of leadership and build awareness about leadership issues on campus and in society. It is also an opportunity for students, faculty and staff to engage in discussion about these important issues,” said Kellie Pickett, assistant director of student leadership. ‘Additionally, it is a chance to make students aware of their own personal leadership potential at Georgia Southern.”

The schedule of events includes the following:

Monday, Jan. 29

•  Leadership Opportunities Fair, Russell Union Rotunda, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Participants can explore leadership positions and opportunities on campus.
•  Leadership 101 Workshop: Ethical Leadership, Russell Union Room 2047, 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Kurt Frederick, director of CRI and Southern Adventures, will challenge participants to explore how ethics play a role in effective leadership.
•  Movie ‘Remember the Titans,” Russell Union Theatre, 7 p.m.

Tuesday, Jan. 30

•  Leadership Opportunities Fair, Russell Union Rotunda, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Participants can explore leadership positions and opportunities on campus.
•  Leadership Lunch Discussion: ‘Leadership in the Modern World,” Russell Union Room 2048, 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. Lunch will be provided for the first 20 participants. Steven Engel, director of the University Honors Program, will facilitate the discussion.
•  Keynote address by Alethea Bonnello, regional youth field director of the Southeast Region of NAACP, Russell Union Ballroom, 7 p.m. Bonnello will present ‘Leadership in the Real World: Taking Risks, Giving Back to the Community and Discovering New Opportunities” which will discuss leadership lessons through her life experiences and sage advice she’s been given along the way. Bonnello, an alumna of the University, has been involved with the NAACP since 1989. In her current position, she oversees the activities in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee.

Wednesday, Jan. 31

•  Leadership Lunch Discussion: ‘The Multicultural Leader,” Russell Union Room 2047, noon to 1 p.m. Lunch will be provided for the first 20 participants. Georj Lewis, dean of students, will facilitate the discussion.
•  Leadership 101 Workshop: ‘Understanding the Animal in You to Become a More Effective Leader,” Russell Union Room 2047, 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. C. Douglas Johnson, assistant professor of management, marketing and logistics, will assist participants in examining their values and strengths to maximize their leadership potential.
•  Working on the Leader Within You – High Ropes at the RAC, Recreation Activity Center, 7 p.m. Participants will find their inner strength by taking risks and challenging themselves to accomplish their goals. To participate, you must register in the Office of Student Leadership in Russell Union Room 2022 or in the Southern Adventures Office at the RAC.

Thursday, Feb. 1

•  Leadership Lunch Discussion: ‘Group Dynamics,” Russell Union Room 2047, 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. Lunch will be provided for the first 20 participants. Charles Hardy, dean of the Jiann-Ping Hsu College of Public Health, will facilitate the discussion.
•  Nationally Competitive Scholarships and Fellowships Workshop, Russell Union Room 2041, 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. Bob Frigo, assistant director of the University Honors Program, will present an overview of awards, application processes and deadlines.
•  Georgia Southern University Leadership Awards Information Session, Russell Union 2047, 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. Information will be provided regarding how to nominate others and be nominated for campus leadership awards.
•  Student Leader Reception, Russell Union Room 2080, 6 p.m. An opportunity to interact with new and veteran leaders.

Friday, Feb. 2
‘Step Into Statesboro,” Russell Union Rotunda, 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. Participants will be asked to put their leadership into action by exploring volunteer opportunities in the Statesboro community. They will volunteer for two hours and return for a dinner.
