Holocaust survivor coming to Georgia Southern University

Holocaust survivor Manya Friedman will speak in the Russell Union Ballroom at Georgia Southern University on Tuesday, Feb. 6, at 7 p.m. ‘The Multicultural Student Center is thrilled to have a part in bringing Ms. Friedman to campus,” Consuela Ward-Pender, director of the Multicultural Student Center said. ‘Students will have an invaluable opportunity to listen to the experiences of someone who lived the history they read about in text books.”

Friedman was born in the small Polish town of Chmielnik, which had a Jewish community dating back to the 16th century. After being taken and forced into concentration camps during World War II, she never saw her family again. Friedman was rescued by the Swedish Red Cross in April 1945. In 1950, she emigrated from Sweden to the United States. Currently she is working as a volunteer at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C., and is an active member of the Museum’s speaker’s bureau.
