University celebrates Black Awareness Month

Georgia Southern University will celebrate Black Awareness Month throughout February. ‘Black history is American history, and to have a comprehensive look at how this country was constructed and currently functions, it is necessary to make sure this piece does not get left out,” Consuela Ward-Pender, director of the Multicultural Student Center said.

The schedule of events include the following:

Thursday, Feb. 1

•  Georgia Southern Black Expo will include booths with artwork, books, food and more relating to African-American culture, between the University Bookstore and Post Office, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
•  At the Black Student Showcase, students will exhibit their talents to represent the influence of the Africana Diaspora in the United States, Russell Union Ballroom, 7 p.m.

Friday, Feb. 2

•  Movie ‘Love Jones,” tells the story of Darius Lovehall, a young black poet in Chicago, who begins dating Nina Moseley, a beautiful and talented photographer. Russell Union Theatre, 9 p.m.

Monday, Feb. 5

•  Town Hall Meeting on Diversity. The program will be facilitated by Kecia Thomas, professor of psychology and director of African-American Studies ad the University of Georgia. Faculty, staff and students are encouraged to voice their opinions about the campus climate as it relates to diversity and inclusion in an open forum. Russell Union Ballroom, 7 p.m.

Thursday, Feb. 8

•  ‘Happy to Be Nappy.” Learn about and discuss the different perspectives African-Americans have of each other and how to bridge the racial divide. Russell Union Room 2047, 7 p.m.

Friday, Feb. 9

• Movie ‘Love and Basketball.” 11-year-old Quincy who doesn’t know what to make of Monica, a girl who can outplay any of the guys on the neighborhood basketball court.

Thursday, Feb. 15

•  Panel discussion ‘Minorities in Medicine.” African-American doctors will serve on the panel to discuss making plans for medical school, as well as issues they encountered while attending medical school. Invited panelists include the director of admissions of the Morehouse School of Medicine. College of Information Technology auditorium, 6 p.m.

•  Panel discussion ‘Minorities in Law and Politics.” Discuss and ask questions of prominent political leaders regarding their views on the political future of black America. Panelists include Linnes Finney, president of the National Law Association, and C. Jack Ellis, mayor of Macon, Ga. College of Education Auditorium, 7 p.m

Friday, Feb. 16

•  Movie ‘Boomerang.” Marcus, a successful advertising executive, woos and beds women almost at will. After a company merger he finds he has a new boss, Jacqueline, who treats him in exactly the same way. Russell Union Theatre, 9 p.m.

Wednesday, Feb. 21

•  Cultural Book Club Discussion ‘The Covenant with Black America” by Tavis Smiley. Discussion will be facilitated by Ron Bailey, professor of history. The book is considered a blueprint for addressing critical issues that confront the African-American community. Its purpose is to inspire the reader to action. Russell Union Room 2044, noon.

Thursday, Feb. 22

•  Black History Quiz Bowl. Test your knowledge of African-American history. Russell Union Room 2047, 7 p.m.

Friday, Feb. 23

•  Movie ‘Thin Line Between Love and Hate.” Nightclub manager Darnell Wright is a perpetual playboy who is almost as devoted to his job as he is to the pursuit of beautiful women. After he sets his sights on Brandi Web, he launches an all-out assault to win her heart. Russell Union Theatre, 9 p.m.

Saturday, Feb. 24

• Family Reunion. Celebrate Black Awareness Month in a traditional family reunion style that includes food, games and contests. Recreation Activities Center Pavilion, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
