University celebrates Women’s Awareness Month

Georgia Southern University will celebrate Women’s Awareness Month throughout March. ‘The importance of this month is to observe the voices of those who historically have not been heard,” Consuela Ward-Pender, director of the Multicultural Student Center said.

The schedule of events include the following:

Thursday, March 1

Take Back the Night March. The march will begin at Hanner Fieldhouse and will proceed to the Russell Union Rotunda, 6 p.m. The march rallies against the sexual assault of women in the night.
Rally to End Sexual Violence. The 2007 Clothesline Project will be dismantled and a candlelight vigil will be held in honor and memory of those who have suffered through sexual and domestic violence. Russell Union Rotunda, 6:30 p.m.

Monday, March 5

Self-Defense Course. Participants will learn basic techniques to defend themselves against attackers. The course will be taught by certified martial arts instructors. Russell Union Room 2080, 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Thursday, March 8

Women’s Awareness Month Read-In. Hear students, faculty and staff read excerpts of expressions of women in a freedom-of-speech style reflective of college campuses in the 1970s. Between the University Store and Russell Union, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Monday, March 19

‘How to Help a Friend Who Has Been Sexually Assaulted.” This brief workshop will discuss how to be supportive and helpful to a friend or loved one who was sexually assaulted. Counseling Center Conference Room, 5 p.m.

Tuesday, March 20

Car Care for Women. Participants will learn basic car care from the mechanics at Cleve White Nissan. Russell Union Rotunda, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
‘How to Help a Friend Who Has Been Sexually Assaulted.” This brief workshop will discuss how to be supportive and helpful to a friend or loved one who was sexually assaulted. Counseling Center Conference Room, noon.

Friday, March 23

Christine O’Leary performance. The comedic diva will explore life issues through humor. Russell Union Ballroom, 8 p.m. Free admission

Tuesday, March 27

‘For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When the Rainbow is Enuf.” Passionate and fearless, author Ntosake Shange’s words reveal what it means to be of color and female in the 20th century. Performing Arts Center, 7 p.m. Free admission.

Thursday, April 5

Nikki Giovanni, keynote speaker, will speak about her experiences as a woman, poet, professor and civil rights activist. Performing Arts Center, 7 p.m.
