Author to give keynote address
Georgia Southern University has celebrated Women’s Awareness Month throughout March. To close the month, the Multicultural Student Center presents Nikki Giovanni as the keynote speaker on Thursday, April 5, at 7 p.m. in the Performing Arts Center. She will speak about her experiences as a woman, poet, professor and civil rights activist.
‘Nikki Giovanni is a living legend,”Consuela Ward-Pender, director of the Multicultural Student Center said. ‘Her work surrounding women’s issues and social justice in conjunction with her strong curriculum vitae make her a great choice to bring to campus.”
Giovanni is a world-renowned poet, writer, communicator, activist and educator. One of the most widely read American poets, she prides herself on being ‘a Black American, a daughter, a mother, a professor of English.” She has written more than 20 books, including books of poetry, children’s books and three collections of essays. She has received 21 honorary doctorates and a number of other awards. Since 1987, she has taught writing and literature at Virginia Tech.
