Legal seminar for businesses will address immigration compliance issues

Employment verification and I-9 compliance are issues that every human resources manager and general manager must know how to handle.

An upcoming Legal Awareness in the Workplace (LAW) seminar sponsored by Georgia Southern University’s Continuing Education Center will help employers gain a better understanding of these matters.

‘Immigration Compliance Issues for Businesses” will be held on Thursday, April 19, at the Coastal Georgia Center in Savannah.

Running from 6 p.m. until 7:30 p.m., the seminar will be taught by Melissa Azallion, an attorney for the Nexsen Pruet law firm in Hilton Head, S.C.

The topics of discussion will include current and prospective immigration compliance laws and their implementation.

‘It is up to each employer to examine documents for every new employee and determine whether the individual is eligible to work in the United States,” Azallion said.

Future LAW seminars in Savannah will include ‘Recent Developments in the Fair Labor Standards Act” on May 17, and ‘Workplace Violence in Georgia” on June 21.

Future LAW seminars at Coastal Georgia Community College in Brunswick will include ‘Coordinating the Triad of FMLA, ADA, and Worker’s Compensation” on May 8 and ‘Federal Labor and Employment Law Record Keeping” on Aug. 14.

The fee for each seminar is $69 per person. The fee will be reduced to $59 per person for anyone who registers for three or more seminars, and for three or more people from the same organization.
