Performing Arts Center ‘Steps’ Into New Season

The Georgia Southern University Performing Arts Center will open its sixth season on Sept. 16 at 7:30 p.m. with the renowned political commentators The Capitol Steps.

The Capitol Steps were created in 1981 when three staffers for Sen. Charles Percy were planning entertainment for a Christmas party. They set out to satirize the very people and places that employed them. They did it so well they became professionals at it and the rest, as they say, is history.

The Steps have become a hit not only in D.C., where they are favorites, but also in Chicago, New York, Atlanta, San Francisco and anywhere people can find humor in American politics. For more than 25 years, the Capitol Steps have recorded dozens of albums and appeared on ‘Good Morning America,” ‘The Today Show,” ’20/20,” ‘Entertainment Tonight,” and many times on National Public Radio’s ‘All Things Considered.”

They came to Statesboro and the Performing Arts Center in the 2004-05 season. PAC Director Albert Pertalion said he had so many requests for them in this political year that he wanted to bring them back.

‘We told the Steps agent that if we could get them before the Presidential election, we’d take them,” Pertalion said. The agent agreed, and the singing, dancing and comedy routine troupe will be on stage to open the PAC’s new season.
