Georgia Southern University Selects Seven Students for Eagles in D.C. Internship

Seven Georgia Southern University students have been selected to participate in the institution’s Eagles in D.C. Congressional Internship program this summer and fall. The 10-week program provides outstanding undergraduate students with congressional internships in Washington, D.C., and Georgia.

Students are selected through a competitive application and interview process to participate in the 10-week program. The internship is designed to provide students with a well-rounded educational opportunity to complement their traditional classroom learning. In addition, the program allows students to immerse themselves into the unique political, intellectual and cultural atmosphere of the nation’s congressional offices. The staff within the Office of the Vice President for Student Affairs and Enrollment Management is excited that the program was expanded this year to include a congressional office in Georgia. The goal will be to expand these opportunities in the future, which will allow more students to participate in the program and give them the flexibility of staying closer to home during their internship.

‘This is one of the more unique internship opportunities in the country because the University actually works with congressional offices to identify the opportunities and then provides a stipend and housing for each of the participants,” said Teresa Thompson, vice president for student affairs and enrollment management for Georgia Southern University. ‘In only its second year, this internship has become extremely competitive and popular as students recognize the unparalleled opportunity for career development and cultural enrichment.” This summer students interning in Washington, D.C., are staying on the campus of George Washington University.

Internship job duties and responsibilities vary by office and the background of each of the selected students. Interns will attend hearings, assist in drafting memos and legislation, participate in Capitol tours, research projects and more.

To be eligible to apply, current undergraduate students must have completed 36 hours in residence at Georgia Southern University by January 1 of the application year and have a GPA of at least 3.0.
