Georgia Southern University Celebrates Opening of Eugene M. Bishop Alumni Center
Georgia Southern University celebrated the latest addition to campus with a ribbon cutting ceremony this afternoon for the Eugene M. Bishop Alumni Center. The nearly 12,000-square-foot Bishop Alumni Center is located on Akins Boulevard in front of the Recreation Activity Center.
‘This is one of the most impressive facilities on campus and will be the center of activity and a receiving point for alumni and guests to campus,” said University President Bruce Grube. ‘Alumni from across the country will not only appreciate the facility’s numerous amenities, but also its outstanding design and accessible location.”
Following the ribbon cutting, the University hosted the Statesboro-Bulloch Chamber of Commerce’s monthly Business After Hours and gave tours of the new facility. The center features the classic ‘Georgia Southern University brick” design, accented with limestone on the exterior and interior, blending it well with the surrounding architecture on campus. One of the most impressive features of the facility is Alumni Hall, a large room designed to host major events.
The Bishop Alumni Center houses the Office of Alumni Relations, Advancement Services, Annual Giving, Foundation Accounting, Governmental Relations and the Office of Development. Those departments moved into their new headquarters last month after being housed in the Eidson Alumni House since January 1984.
Dr. Gene Bishop of Dawsonville, Ga., provided the lead gift for the Center. Dr. Bishop is a long-time friend and generous supporter of the University.
‘We are very excited about this beautiful new facility and are very grateful for the support of Dr. Gene Bishop,” said Billy Griffis, vice president of University Advancement at Georgia Southern.’The Eugene M. Bishop Alumni Center stands as a tribute to our alumni, friends and others who have helped make Georgia Southern what it is today.”
The location of the center was chosen for its convenient accessibility to out-of-town guests and alumni returning to campus. The facility, located within walking distance of Allen E. Paulson Stadium, will allow for the expansion of alumni services with facilities for receptions, special events and programs vital to the University as it continues to grow.
Georgia Southern University, a Carnegie Doctoral/Research University, offers 115 degree programs serving nearly 18,000 students. Through eight colleges, the University offers bachelors, masters and doctoral degree programs built on more than a century of academic achievement. The University, one of Georgia’s largest, is a top choice of Georgia’s HOPE scholars and is recognized for its student-centered approach to education.
