Sustainability Expert to Speak at Georgia Southern University on Oct. 20

Georgia Southern University will welcome Dr. Peter Corcoran to campus on Oct. 20 as part of the 2009-10 Sustainability Seminar Series.

Corcoran, Director of the Center for Environmental and Sustainability Education at Florida Gulf Coast University, will discuss “The Urgency of Mainstreaming Sustainability in Higher Education: An Ethical Perspective.” His presentation at 7 p.m. in the Nessmith-Lane Building Assembly Hall is free and open to the public.

Corcoran recently spoke alongside Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Wangari Maathai at the United Nations Environment Programme in Nairobi, Kenya. They addressed diplomats, U.N. officials, local dignitaries and scholars from African universities gathered for a “Symposium on Climate Change Education and Sustainable Cities.”

“Dr. Corcoran brings a global perspective to incorporating sustainability into higher education,” said Dr. Lissa Leege, Director of the Center for Sustainability in Georgia Southern’s College of Science and Technology. “We are delighted to host him here at Georgia Southern and look forward to his urgent message about sustainability in education.”

An author of several books on environmental sustainability, Corcoran has been a visiting professor in Australia and The Netherlands. He works extensively in international environmental education with special interest in the South Pacific Island Nations. Corcoran is a co-founder of the Global Higher Education for Sustainability Partnership and is a past president of the North American Association for Environmental Education.

The Sustainability Seminar Series is one of the ways Georgia Southern University demonstrates its commitment to the environment. The 2008-09 series brought speakers including Ed Begley Jr., Hunter Lovins and Jeff Seabright to campus.
