Georgia Southern University Faculty Member Karl Peace, Ph.D. Honored By United States Congress

Georgia Southern University faculty member Karl E. Peace, Ph. D. has been honored on the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives for his numerous professional and charitable contributions. Peace is a Georgia Cancer Coalition Distinguished Cancer Scholar, Senior Research Scientist and Professor of Biostatistics in the Jiann-Ping Hsu College of Public Health at Georgia Southern University.

Peace was honored by Rep. Robert Wittman (R-VA) who cited Peace’s numerous contributions to drug research and development, public health, biostatistics and philanthropy. Wittman said, “Dr. Peace has a dedicated record of philanthropy to education. He has created twenty-one endowments at five institutions including three at his alma mater, the Medical College of Virginia and one at Randolph-Macon College. He endowed the Jiann-Ping Hsu College of Public Health, the first school of public health in the University of Georgia System. His endowments have enabled hundreds of students to complete their undergraduate or graduate degrees. Dr. Peace has generously donated time and resources to organizations such as the American Cancer Society, the Georgia Cancer Coalition, the Southeast Georgia Cancer Alliance and the Southwest Georgia Cancer Coalition that are dedicated to cancer research, treatments and cures.”

“I am grateful to Congressman Wittman for his acknowledgement of my achievements on the floor of the U.S. Congress and their inclusion in the Congressional Record,” said Peace. “This is good for the schools with which I’ve been associated and especially for our Jiann-Ping Hsu College of Public Health at Georgia Southern University.”

Peace was recently elected as the chair-elect of the Statistics Section of the American Public Health Association. He is a past member of the Committee on Applied and Theoretical Statistics, National Research Council, National Academy of Science and past Chair of the Biostatistics Subsection of the Pharmaceutical Manufacturers Association (BSPMA), the Training Committee of the BSPMA, and the Biopharmaceutical Section of the American Statistical Association. He is the founder of the Biopharmaceutical Applied Statistics Symposium and the Journal of Biopharmaceutical Statistics.

Peace is the recipient of numerous citations and awards and was named a Fellow of the American Statistical Association. He has also been honored with the Distinguished Service Award of the Drug Information Association. Peace was recognized as a Star and Featured Alumnus, School of Basic Sciences at the Medical College of Virginia and also received the Founders Society Medal from the Medical College of Virginia. At Georgia Southern University he has been honored as the College of Science and Technology Alumnus of the year, Alumnus of the year in private enterprise, received the Presidential Fellowship Award, was named the Jiann-Ping Hsu College of Public Health Researcher of the year, won the 2008 Award for Excellence in Research Activity, and was the first recipient of the prestigious President’s Medal for outstanding service and extraordinary contributions. He won the 2007 American Public Health Association Statistics Section Award for contributions to drug research and development, the 2008 Shining Star and HR #2118 recognition by Georgia House of Representatives, the Tito Mijares Lifetime Achievement Award from the Philippines Statistical Association, the Deen Day Smith Humanitarian Award and numerous meritorious service awards from the Southwest Georgia Cancer Coalition, the American Society for Quality Control, and the Biopharmaceutical Applied Statistics Symposium.

Peace’s areas of research interest include drug research and clinical development, clinical trial methodology, and applied public health research. Peace is also the author or editor of nine books, and the author or co-author of 200 articles. His autobiography, Paid in Full (available at www.plowboy-press.com ), was released earlier this year and traces his life from his childhood on a sharecropping farm in Georgia, to his rise in the pharmaceutical industry, and on to his work in higher education and philanthropy that includes the endowment of Georgia Southern University’s Jiann-Ping Hsu College of Public Health in honor of his late wife.
