Georgia Southern University Names New College of Education Dean
Georgia Southern University has named Thomas R. Koballa, Jr., Ph.D. the new dean of the University’s College of Education.
Dr. Koballa currently serves as a faculty member in the University of Georgia’s Department of Mathematics and Science Education. He will assume his duties at Georgia Southern University on July 1, 2010.
“Dr. Koballa has a long record of teaching and researching many aspects of education,” said Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs Gary Means. “Georgia Southern’s College of Education has a history of training some of Georgia’s most dedicated and talented teachers and education administrators. We look forward to Dr. Koballa leading our College of Education into an era of continued growth and success as we prepare tomorrow’s education professionals.”
In addition to the University of Georgia, Koballa has also held academic positions at the University of Texas at Austin, Pikeville College and Morehead State University. He served as a guest professor at the University of Kiel in Germany.
Koballa served as President of the National Association for Research in Science Teaching and has held leadership positions in a number of professional organizations, including the Association for the Education of Teachers in Science, the Council of Scientific Society Presidents and the Georgia Science Teachers Association. Koballa is the author and co-author of numerous books and articles about the field of education.
Koballa holds a doctorate in Curriculum and Instruction from Pennsylvania State University. He received his Masters of Education in Science Education and his Bachelor of Science in Biology degree from East Carolina University.
