Georgia Southern University to Celebrate ArtsFest 2010
Georgia Southern University’s Betty Foy Sanders Department of Art will host ArtsFest 2010 on April 10 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on the University’s Sweetheart Circle.
ArtsFest, which brings over 6,000 visitors to the Statesboro area each year, is free and open to the public. The event celebrates the arts and arts education through performances, exhibiting and demonstrating artists, and hands-on activities and games.
“ArtsFest unites the community and University to celebrate the importance of the Arts. Especially in this economic climate, we’re delighted to be able to offer a day of creative activities and performances that are fun and free for all ages,” said ArtsFest 2010 Director Stephanie Neal.
ArtsFest attendees can enjoy BBQ and festival food, a variety of performances on the main stage, and watch artists demonstrating their talents in jewelry, folk art, painting, ceramics, sculpture, and photography, including Staying in Stitches Quilting Guild, Threads of Hope and more.Georgia Folk artists Peter Loose and Chris Hubbard will display artworks and a one-of-a-kind Art Car.
Magic Marc from WTOC-TV in Savannah will bring humor, education, and exciting illusions to the main stage from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. followed by demonstrations of magic tricks for all to learn, and a chance to interact with Magic Marc’s menagerie of unique pets. Brien Engel makes glass sing while performing with his glass harp consisting of 50 glasses of different sizes. Engel’s extensive repertoire includes popular songs, Jazz standards, and classical music.
Local performers from Statesboro will also have the chance to showcase their talent for acting, dancing, singing and more on the Community Stage sponsored by the Averitt Center for the Arts. Feature performers include Pladd Dot Music’s School of Rock and the Helen Redding School of Dance.
“For the past 27 years, the Betty Foy Sanders Department of Art has hosted the spring arts festival, providing a day for the arts to Bulloch County and the surrounding region. Generations of families hold fond memories of this event that was once a part of their childhood, and is now part of their own children’s experience,” said Betty Foy Sanders Department of Art Chair Patricia Carter. “Our goal is to provide such a quality and quantity of arts events that attendees end their day at the festival with unlimited inspiration from the exhilarating fun they had. We want people to go home and mark their calendars for ArtsFest 2011 as a day they don’t want to miss!”
