Georgia Southern University to Host National Youth at Risk Conference

Teachers and guidance counselors from around the United States will learn how to help children facing problems like poverty, bullying, drugs, and teen pregnancy at Georgia Southern University’s 22^nd Annual National Youth at Risk Conference in Savannah, Ga.

The conference, which will be held March 6-9, 2011 at the Hyatt Regency, is designed to arm teachers and guidance counselors with the knowledge and insight they need to help students whose education is in jeopardy because of problems at home or school. Helping children in poverty will be one of the main focuses of the event.

“Poverty is a huge issue that is often neglected,” said Dan Rea, conference co-chair. “Demographics show more and more children across the U.S. are being born into single-parent families at poverty level.”

More than 1,000 teachers and guidance counselors are scheduled to attend the conference. In addition to numerous workshops and discussions centered around teaching at-risk children, the professionals will also hear from three keynote speakers. Marsha Tate will share proven strategies for engaging students intellectually, and Joseph Washington will provide inspirational tips for motivating students to be more than mediocre. Donna Beegle, who personally broke the vicious generational cycle of poverty and rose to success, will share her incredible life story.
