Georgia Southern University to Feature Two New Art Exhibits

STATESBORO, Ga. – Jan. 11, 2013 — Georgia Southern University’s Betty Foy Sanders Department of Art presents two new exhibits beginning Jan. 14. “Karen Ann Myers: Intimate Patterns” and “Michael Velliquette: Power Seeker” will be featured in the University Gallery through Feb. 24.

“Power Seeker” is a survey of cut-paper sculptures by Velliquette. He works exclusively with
hand-cut heavyweight paper card stock to construct visually and structurally complex forms that reference masks and other forms of ritually driven object making.

“The exhibition examines how a seemingly familiar and fragile material can be transformed into powerful spectacles of the handmade,” said Marc Mitchell, gallery director for the Department. “Kids will love the bright colors and wild imagery, while adults will be fascinated by the intricate details and craftsmanship that is evident in each sculpture.”

“Intimate Patterns” looks at the psychological complexity of women through intimate observations of the bedroom. This exhibit contains imagery of a mature nature, and parents are encouraged to contact the Department of Art at 912-478-2787 before bringing children.

“While many of the images are very provocative, Myers is concerned with issues that extend far beyond seduction. Her paintings tackle topics facing contemporary females, such as the cult of beauty in mass media, personal and professional independence, and vulnerability,” added Mitchell.

Both exhibits include artist lectures and receptions. “Power Seeker” will be featured on Thursday, Jan. 17, at 5 p.m. in the Arts Building, Room 2016, and “Intimate Patterns” will be showcased on Thursday, Feb. 21, at 5 p.m.  All events are free and open to the public. The Center for Art & Theatre is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and by appointment.
