Spring 2013 Graduation Speakers Announced
Georgia Southern University has selected physicist Michio Kaku, Ph.D., and U.S. Securities and Exchange Commissioner Luis Aguilar to speak during the 2013 spring commencement on May 10 and 11.
Kaku will speak Friday, May 10 at 1 p.m. at Hanner Fieldhouse during the commencement ceremony for graduate students. Commissioner Aguilar will address undergraduates as they receive their degrees on Saturday, May 11 at 9 a.m. at Paulson Stadium.
Luis Aguilar was appointed to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission by President George W. Bush in 2008 and reappointed by President Barack Obama in 2011 to continue overseeing the country’s financial markets. Aguilar arrived in the U.S. when he was six years old as his family escaped communist Cuba. He is a 1976 graduate of Georgia Southern. “The foundation for any career often starts with an excellent education, which I received at Georgia Southern,” Aguilar said in an interview with the University’s magazine. “I believe my education initially prepared me for new situations and gave me the confidence that I will know the critical questions to ask.”
Michio Kaku is an internationally recognized authority on the laws of physics and is also an expert in using research to predict trends affecting business, commerce and finance. Kaku is a New York Times best-selling author and has hosted numerous documentaries on the Discovery Channel, the Science Channel and BBC-TV.
