Out of the Darkness Walk for Suicide Prevention
Georgia Southern students, faculty and staff and everyone in the Statesboro area are invited to be part of the Out of the Darkness Walk this Saturday, April 27, to raise money for suicide prevention.
Registration for the walk begins at 9 a.m. at the Russell Union Rotunda. You can also register online as an individual or as a team at http://afsp.donordrive.com/event/georgiasouthern. For more information, email Allison Little at alittle245@gmail.com.
Proceeds go to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) to fund research, as well as provide education and information through public workshops, trainings, films, publications and service announcements addressing teen depression.
According to the AFSP, 38,000 people commit suicide each year in the United States. That translates into one suicide nearly every 14 minutes. Suicide is the second leading cause of death among college students and the third leading cause of death in people ages 15-24.
Some of the most common warning signs of suicide include feelings of hopelessness, thoughts of death or suicide, withdrawal from family and friends, increased drug or alcohol use, anxiety, anger, rage and feelings of being trapped.
If you or someone you know is experiencing any of these symptoms, please contact the Georgia Southern Counseling & Career Development Center at 912-478-5541.
