Celebrate Sustainability during GreenFest
Georgia Southern University’s Center for Sustainability wants to teach people how to lead greener, more sustainable lives and take better care of the environment during GreenFest on the lawn of the Bulloch County Courthouse, 2 N. Main St., on Saturday, Oct. 5 from 9 a.m. – 1 p.m.
“This is a community celebration of sustainability with activities, workshops and more than 30 exhibitors and vendors celebrating everything green,” said Lissa Leege, director of the Center for Sustainability. “We will have some unique opportunities here to create rain barrels, learn how to weatherproof your home and make a worm compost bin. Come to GreenFest and you will be sure to take home some items and ideas to make your life more sustainable.”
GreenFest is free and open to everyone and includes live music, educational activities, sustainable art and vendors with green products. Whether its watching a yoga demonstration or a green puppet show, observing a working bee hive, tasting some sustainably grown food or creating art from recycled materials, organizers say it will be fun for the whole family.
Two other green events are happening during GreenFest. The Main Street Statesboro Farmers Market is taking place across the street from the courthouse from 9 a.m. – 12:30 p.m with fresh local and sustainable food and crafts for sale. People can also register to volunteer for Rivers Alive which is an annual cleanup of area waterways organized by Keep Bulloch Beautiful. Volunteers will meet on the courthouse lawn 9 a.m. -1 p.m.
Leege is encouraged to see growing public interest in leading green lifestyles. “I think the public is ready for solutions to sustainability issues,” said Leege. “We realize that our resources are limited, and we have to start doing something to preserve them for the future. This is all about providing solutions and celebrating the sustainable solutions that we already know about.
