Georgia Southern to Welcome ‘Father of UPS Sustainability’
Georgia Southern University’s Center for Sustainability and the Department of Management in the College of Business Administration will welcome David Guernsey, the ‘father of sustainability at United Parcel Service (UPS),’ to campus for his presentation of “Driving Sustainability in Corporate America.” Guernsey will share his seminar on Thursday, Oct. 3 at 7 p.m. at the Nessmith-Lane Conference Center, Assembly Hall Auditorium, 847 Plant Drive.
“David Guernsey’s experience making the business case for organizational efforts to also improve social and environmental outcomes of enterprise will provide students with real implementations of sustainability in business, said Gerard J. Burke, Ph.D., Chair of the Department of Management and Operations Management professor. “His perspective of valuing organizational contributions in not just dollars and cents, but also in social and environmental qualities of communities, will prepare students to factor broader objectives than a simple bottom-dollar one into their professional and personal decision-making.”
In his 34 years with UPS, Guernsey has become a pioneer of sustainability in the transportation industry to reduce the carbon footprint of UPS. He has been credited for his passion and hard work to develop a more sustainable business model for the global shipping giant. His achievements include being named a 2011 SmartWay Champion by the Environmental Protection Agency and earning the number one spot for social responsibility on Fortune magazine’s most admired list.
Guernsey’s appearance is part of the Center for Sustainability’s seminar series, which has featured prominent national and international speakers since 2008. The presentation is free and open to everyone.
