Georgia Southern Talks Race, Crime and Community
Georgia Southern University’s Department of Criminal Justice and Criminology will present a lecture series throughout March to discuss police and community relations in the United States. The series will conclude with keynote speaker Alice Goffman, Ph.D., on Thursday, April 2 at 6:30 p.m. in the Russell Union Theater.
In her lecture titled “On the Run: Fugitive Life in an American City,” the professor of sociology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison will discuss her research on police surveillance, the war on drugs and the experiences of people living in an inner-city neighborhood in Philadelphia.
“Recent incidents in Ferguson, Cleveland and Staten Island highlight the fragile relationship between police and the community,” said Georgia Southern Professor of Criminal Justice and Criminology Chad Posick, Ph.D. “This series will revisit the history of civil rights and the role it played in police-community relations, bring to light recent issues confronted by police and the communities that they serve, as well as discuss some possible avenues for improving the relationship between the police and community members.”
Series lectures leading up to Goffman’s speech will take place March 9 in the Carroll Building at 2:30 p.m. and March 12 and 26 at the Information Technology Building at 9:30 a.m. The Campus Life Enrichment Committee, the Multicultural Student Center and the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences contributed to the funding for the series. All of the lectures in this series are free and open to the public. Attendance verification will be provided for students.
