5th Annual Critical Media Literacy Conference call for papers open

A call for papers is now open for the 5th Annual Critical Media Literacy Conference, a multidisciplinary conference that is designed to aid current educational leaders, future teachers, youth and other concerned citizens in their understanding of the mass media and its impact on the events that shape our daily lives. The conference is set for Feb. 25 at the Coastal Georgia Center, 305 Fahm Street, in Savannah.

The theme is Critical Media Literacy in the Age of Neoliberalism, and the deadline to submit is Dec. 15.

Papers can be submitted in the following strands:

1. Liberal Arts: Papers in this strand will explore the existing or potential connection between the liberal arts and critical media inquiry.
2. Educational Foundations: Papers in this strand will explore interpretive, normal and critical approaches to examining media. Papers that address critical pedagogy in online spaces are also highly desirable.
3. Curriculum Studies: How does the study of critical media literacy impact the continual reconceptualization of curriculum theory and curriculum studies?
4. Critical Media Literacy New Inquiries: Papers in this strand will explore questions and issues related to shifting definition of literacy, critical media literacy and potential new intersections of inquiry.

Peter McLaren, Ph.D., author and editor of nearly 50 books, will be the keynote speaker at the conference. Five of McLaren’s books won the Critic’s Choice Award of the American Educational Studies Association and one, “Life in Schools: An Introduction to Critical Pedagogy in the Foundations of Education,” was named one of the 12 most significant writings by foreign authors in the field of educational theory, policy and practice by the Moscow School of Social Economic Sciences.
