R. Frank Saunders, Jr. History Lecture Series
Georgia Southern’s Department of History inaugurates the R. Frank Saunders, Jr. Lecture Series in December with a lecture titled, “Lying in State: The Diplomacy of Daniel Webster.”
The lecture will be given by professor of American studies at Winthrop University, Donald Rakestraw, Ph.D., on Dec. 1 at 6:30 p.m. in the Nessmith-Lane Conference Center Auditorium, Room 1915.
Rakestraw served as professor of history for 25 years and director of American studies, beginning in 2006, at Georgia Southern before retiring and relocating to Winthrop in 2013. He has published dozens of scholarly works including a Choice Academic Book of the Year selection, Prologue to Manifest Destiny: Anglo-American Relations in the 1840s and “The Diplomacy of the Civil War” in American Foreign Relations: A Guide to the Literature since 1600.
He is currently writing Defender of the Peace: the Diplomacy of Daniel Webster for Rowman & Littlefield.
During this lecture, Rakestraw will offer a glimpse at Daniel Webster, the diplomatist, as he demonstrated a mastery of “lying in state” and left a legacy in foreign relations that rivals that of statesmen and lawyer.
The lecture is free and open to the public, and proof of attendance will be provided.
