Georgia Southern University to Host 1st Annual Georgia Scholarship of STEM Teaching and Learning Conference

03-08 Georgia Southern University to Host 1st Annual Georgia Scholarship of STEM Teaching and Learning Conference.jogGeorgia Southern University will host a one-day conference for faculty and graduate students  from all University System of Georgia (USG) colleges and universities as well as private higher education institutions within the state. The Scholarship of STEM Teaching and Learning Conference will be held on Friday, March 9, 2012 at the Nessmith-Lane Conference Center on Georgia Southern’s campus.

Education in science, technology, engineering and math, from the youngest grades to postdoctoral scholarship, is not just a priority in Georgia, but nationwide, says Thomas Koballa, Ph.D., dean of Georgia Southern’s College of Education. “This conference is one example of how Georgia is working hard to advance STEM teaching and learning across the state.  We’re showcasing the innovative STEM work that’s happening in Georgia and giving educators a chance to exchange and share experiences.”

The conference complements the USG’s STEM Initiative whose goals include: promoting K-12 student preparation for and interest in majoring in STEM fields in college; increasing the success of STEM majors in college; and producing more and better science and mathematics teachers for K-12 schools, which in turn will lead to increased preparation of students in science and mathematics.

“Our hope is that this conference will bring attention to the importance of learning support and remediation to student success in STEM courses across Georgia’s institutions of higher education,” said Koballa.  “It’s attracted quite a bit of interest from throughout the state, particularly given not only Georgia Southern’s focus on STEM education, but the entire University System of Georgia.”

The conference is sponsored by the USG’s Board of Regents and is hosted by Georgia Southern’s College of Education, the Allen E. Paulson College of Science and Technology and the Division of Continuing Education.
