Georgia Southern University to Host Environmental and Economic Sustainability Expert Majora Carter
Georgia Southern University will host renowned environmental and economic sustainability expert Majora Carter on Monday, Feb. 15, 2010 at the Performing Arts Center beginning at 7:00 p.m. The event is free and open to the pubic.
Carter’s lecture entitled “Green the Ghetto and How Much It Won’t Cost Us” will focus on how environmental and economic sustainability can go hand-in-hand, creating both jobs that lead to economic stability and green initiatives that improve the health of individuals and their surrounding environment.
Carter is the founder and president of the Majora Carter Group LLC, a consulting firm that helps groups create environmental initiatives that are economically beneficial. She is also host of the National Public Radio show “The Promised Land.”
Carter began her career by creating Sustainable South Bronx, a group formed to fight both the economic and environmental disparities in that section of New York City. The program advocated against increased industry-fed pollution, searched for environmentally-friendly solutions, and created jobs to go along with those solutions.
“Majora Carter is an example of someone who saw major problems and wasn’t afraid to work to solve them,” said Georgia Southern University Center for Sustainability Director Lissa Leege, Ph.D. “By fighting pollution while creating green initiatives and jobs, Carter is a catalyst for positive environmental and economic change. We think our students will be inspired by her efforts and her results.”
Carter’s visit is part of Georgia Southern University’s Sustainability Seminar Series and is sponsored by the Center for Sustainability, the University Wellness Program, and the Campus Life Enrichment Committee.
