Georgia Southern University professor to read from newly published memoir

Sonya Huber-Humes, assistant professor of creative writing at Georgia Southern University, will read from her recently released memoir, ‘Opa Nobody,” on Monday, March 10, at 7 p.m. in Room 1115, College of Education.

Published by the University of Nebraska Press in their American Lives Series, ‘Opa Nobody” tells the story of Huber-Humes’ grandfather, a German labor organizer and anti-Nazi activist, while simultaneously describing her own journey of social awareness and activism. Author Bill Roorbach describes ‘Opa Nobody” as a masterful layering of lives, a beautifully readable and often poetic tracing of the heart lines between grandfather and granddaughter.’ And Lee Martin writes, Sonya Huber is a writer of remarkable talent and courage . . . . ‘Opa Nobody” is a brave book of politics, history, and love”a book filled with an irrepressible embrace of humanity.’

Huber-Humes has been publishing nonfiction, fiction, and poetry since 1985 in a variety of journals and anthologies, including Fourth Genre, Passages North, the Chronicle of Higher Education, Psychology Today, Main Street Rag, Literary Mama, and Kaleidoscope, with new work forthcoming in Hotel Amerika, Sub-lit and others.

Born in Evergreen Park, Ill., she received her undergraduate degree from Carleton College in Sociology/Anthropology in 1993, her master’s in public interest journalism from The Ohio State University in 2000, and her MFA in creative writing from The Ohio State University in 2004. She joined Georgia Southern University’s Department of Writing & Linguistics in 2006. She teaches introductory creative writing, intermediate and advanced creative nonfiction, and first year writing.
