Animals at Wildlife Center to receive annual physical examinations

Here are two upcoming events at Georgia Southern University that will provide members of the media with unique coverage opportunities:

Annual animal examinations

More than 100 animals at Georgia Southern University’s Center for Wildlife Education will receive their annual physical examinations on Saturday and Sunday, Jan. 13 and 14.

The physical exams will be conducted by a group of veterinary medicine students from the University of Georgia. Georgia Southern students who work at the Wildlife Center will assist with the physical exams.

A wide variety of raptors, reptiles, amphibians and mammals will be examined by the students. The animals will range from eagles and hawks to pythons and rattlesnakes.

The physical exams benefit the Wildlife Center by helping to keep the animals healthy, and they benefit the vet students by giving them hands-on experience with exotic animals.

On Saturday, the physical exams will be conducted from 9 a.m. until noon and from 2 p.m. until 6 p.m. On Sunday, the physicals will be conducted from 8 a.m. until noon and from 1 p.m. until 5 p.m.

Falconry field meet

Falconers from Georgia, South Carolina and Florida are scheduled to bring their birds of prey to rural Bulloch County this weekend for the annual Georgia Game Hawkers Club falconry field meet.

Falconry is the hunting of wild quarry in its natural habitat by a trained raptor. A variety of hawks and falcons will stalk rabbits, squirrels and ducks during the meet, which will run from Saturday, Jan. 13, through Monday, Jan. 15.
