Computer-based courses for childcare pros who work with infants

Infants require specialized care from birth through eight months of age, as any doting mother or father can tell you.

To make sure these babies receive proper attention in daycare facilities, the state of Georgia requires Early Childhood Education (ECE) professionals to have the right kind of training.

Georgia Southern University’s Training for Childcare Professionals program has just added three new computer-based courses for ECE professionals, covering the core areas in which infants differ from older babies and children.

‘Cognitive and Language Development of Young Infants” and ‘Physical and Emotional Development of Young Infants” are two-hour CD-ROM courses that provide caregivers with a core understanding of the developmental milestones each child is expected to reach by the eighth month.

‘Nurturing and Caring for Young Infants” is the third new class in the University’s roster of computer-based childcare-training courses. This class covers the basic skills and knowledge required to provide safe, healthy and intellectually-stimulating care for infants from birth through eight months.

Special topics in this course include safe and interesting toys, bottle-feeding and burping, and how to prevent and relieve diaper rash and crying.

Georgia Southern’s Continuing Education Center offers a total of 18 courses that are accepted as meeting ECE training requirements for the state of Georgia. The courses are available on CD for a fee of $20 per course.

Class members must register and pay in advance in order to take any two-hour course on their own time. Students must earn at least 70 percent on the exam in order to pass the course.
