Lance Hosey to Share Vision of Green Designs

STATESBORO, Ga. –  Georgia Southern University’s Center for Sustainability and the Interior Design Program will welcome Lance Hosey, a pioneer in the field of sustainable design, on Tuesday, Feb. 4 at 7 p.m. in the Nessmith-Lane Conference Center, Assembly Hall, 847 Plant Drive. Hosey will explore the relationships between sustainability and beauty. His presentation, “The Shape of Green: Aesthetics, Ecology and Design,” is free and open to the public.

“Lance Hosey will link our understanding of aesthetics and sustainability and show us how beauty can save the planet,” said Lissa Leege, director of the Center for Sustainability. “Students of science, art and design, engineering, construction and other fields will appreciate his cutting edge thinking and sustainability message.”

Hosey is an architect, author and the Chief Sustainability Officer with global design leader RTKL. “Bringing in an architect such as Lance provides another, equally significant, look at sustainability and its role on the places where we spend the majority of our time — the built environments where we work and live,” said Interior Design Program Coordinator Amy Boyett.  “Interior design students will be able to directly relate to Lance and his experience working in architecture. His ideas are creative and original and will inspire and challenge students to think about sustainability from a different angle.”

With support from the Center for Sustainability, Facilities Services has been a driving force behind initiatives to boost conservation at Georgia Southern and develop a more environmentally friendly curriculum and campus. “As one of the top green universities in the country, we are making great progress at Georgia Southern,” said Leege. “Since 2011, we have added five sustainable renovated and new buildings. We are a leader in water conservation techniques with our campus water reuse system, and native and sustainable landscaping.” Student sustainability fees are being used to support Hosey’s appearance. The seminar series began in 2008.

Other events to focus on sustainability are planned for later in the spring including the “Ocean Film Festival” at Russell Union Theater on March 4 and “No Impact Week” from April 13-20. That week emphasizes ways people can improve and protect our environment and have no impact on Earth for a week. The highlight of “No Impact Week” is a speech by Nobel Prize winner and former U.S. Secretary of Energy Dr. Steven Chu on April 15.
