Georgia Southern University carried on a summer tradition by serving watermelon to students, staff and faculty. The event began in the summer of 1948 and servers said it\u2019s a way of bringing the University together at a time of year when some may think there\u2019s no one around. The tradition traces back to the period when the University had only 100 or so summer students and when Georgia Southern had its own farm to grow most of the food served in the dining hall. \u201cWhen you get them all together in a setting like this, there\u2019s more people here than you realize because parking lots might not show it,\u201d said Michael Price, director of culinary operations. \u201cThis gives you a chance to get people together for a bit.\u201d<\/p>\n
