{"id":3957,"date":"2011-10-20T13:24:52","date_gmt":"2011-10-20T17:24:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ww2.georgiasouthern.edu\/news\/sites\/gsm\/?p=78"},"modified":"2016-02-02T12:47:40","modified_gmt":"2016-02-02T17:47:40","slug":"sidelines-georgis-southern-eagle-athletics-roundup","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ww2.georgiasouthern.edu\/news\/magazine\/2011\/10\/20\/sidelines-georgis-southern-eagle-athletics-roundup\/","title":{"rendered":"Sidelines &#8211; Fall 2011"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4>SOCON, PUBLIC TELEVISION AGREE TO FOOTBALL BROADCASTS<\/h4>\n<p>The Southern Conference has agreed to a three-year plan with public television systems in Georgia, North Carolina and South Carolina to televise SoCon football, including three Georgia Southern games this year \u2013 two at home and one away.<\/p>\n<p>Eight conference games will be televised in each of the 2011, 2012 and 2013 seasons and coverage will reach nearly 11 million homes through 32 affiliates, making it the largest regional distribution option across both broadcast and cable.<\/p>\n<p>The network will televise Georgia Southern\u2019s Oct. 8 home game vs. Chatta\u00adnooga at 3 p.m., the Oct. 15 home game vs. Furman at 3 p.m. and the Oct. 29 game at Appalachian State at 3 p.m.<\/p>\n<h4>ASSOCIATE AD BEENE TO CHAIR DIVISION I TENNIS COMMITTEE<\/h4>\n<p>The NCAA Men\u2019s and Wom\u00aden\u2019s Tennis Com\u00admittee has tabbed Georgia Southern Associate Director of Athletics Cathy Beene to serve as chair for the com\u00ading season.<\/p>\n<p>Beene has served on the Committee since 2009. This season marks the second term Beene has served as chair, having led the group from 1993-1997.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m humbled that my colleagues have chosen me to lead the Division I Ten\u00adnis Committee for a second time,\u201d said Beene. \u201cBeing selected to chair a national committee is a tremendous honor for both Georgia Southern and the Southern Conference.\u201d<\/p>\n<h4>EAGLE ATHLETES NAMED TO SOCON ACADEMIC TEAM<\/h4>\n<p>Twenty-two Georgia Southern athletes have been named to the All-Southern Conference Academic Team comprised of the highest-performing students in the conference.<\/p>\n<p>Tennis player Alessandra Dzuba joined the list as one of 13 SoCon student-ath\u00adletes to maintain a perfect 4.0 cumulative grade point average.<\/p>\n<p>Also named to the team were: Logan Blondell, golf; Ali Beavers, women\u2019s ten\u00adnis; Kelly Burnett, softball; Bethany Cren\u00adshaw; softball; Sara Curry, track and field; Matthew Deal, golf; Hanna Ennis, softball; Sebastien Felt, men\u2019s tennis; Morgan Jef\u00adferson, track and field; and Kassi Lee, track and field.<\/p>\n<p>Also, Victor Roache, baseball; Eric Phil\u00adlips, baseball; Natalie Maffett, women\u2019s tennis; Juan Puigventos Melian, men\u2019s tennis; Mark Paetz, men\u2019s tennis; Adrea Tarashuk, softball; Jorie Walker, softball; Brittani Martin, track and field; Colin Snow, baseball; Mathijis Verdam, men\u2019s tennis; and Mackenzie Williams, softball.<\/p>\n<h4>MINCEY TO LEAD CROSS COUNTRY, TRACK AND FIELD<\/h4>\n<p>Former Eagle Marlo Mincey will lead the Georgia Southern track and field pro\u00adgrams as their new head coach.<\/p>\n<p>Mincey comes to the University from Georgetown Uni\u00adversity where she helped the Hoyas finish in the Top 25 at the 2011 NCAA Outdoor Championships.<\/p>\n<p>The new coach competed for the Eagles in the NCAA outdoor regionals in 2004 and set three outdoor and two indoor University records. She finished her Georgia Southern career with six SoCon titles and a degree in exercise science. She completed a master\u2019s degree in sport management in 2007.<\/p>\n<h4>DIVING NAMES GIAMBRA NEW COACH<\/h4>\n<p>Former Clemson standout diver David Giambra has been named head diving coach for the Eagles.<\/p>\n<p>Giamba lettered for four years for the Tigers and holds school records in one-meter and three-meter events.<\/p>\n<p>Georgia South\u00adern\u2019s swimming and diving team was ranked in the Top 10 among NCAA Division I women\u2019s swim\u00adming and diving programs last sea\u00adson in the Avidas\u00adports Performance Rankings.<\/p>\n<h4>SOPHOMORE SLUGGER DISPLAYS HIS HITTING SKILLS<\/h4>\n<p>Georgia Southern sophomore and NCAA Division I home run leader Victor Roache finished second in a field of eight of the nation\u2019s best home run hitters in the TD Ameritrade College Homerun Derby in Omaha last summer.<\/p>\n<p>College of Charleston\u2019s Daniel Aldrich took the title in the event, which was televised live by CBS Sports.
