She became Chair of the Department of Mathematical Sciences in 2004, a role she held until being named the Interim Dean of COSM in 2012. \u201cCOSM has a great history of excellence in teaching, research and service,\u201d said Abell. \u201cMy goal is to help our College continue to provide our faculty with the resources they need to do exceptional things, whether it\u2019s time to develop world-renowned research programs, build nationally-acclaimed degree programs or provide much needed outreach programs to inspire more students in our region to study science and mathematics.\u201d<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>College of Health and Human Sciences<\/h2>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/ww2.georgiasouthern.edu\/news\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/CollegeNews-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-1798\" src=\"http:\/\/ww2.georgiasouthern.edu\/news\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/CollegeNews-1-315x283.jpg\" alt=\"CollegeNews-1\" width=\"250\" height=\"224\" \/><\/a>Air Flight Nurse Visits Nursing Students<\/strong><br \/>\nSchool of Nursing Instructor and alumna Marie Graf invited<br \/>\nStacey Tapley (\u201803) and the Statesboro Air-Evac Lifeteam Flight Nurse team to the School of Nursing&#8217;s Mock Codes, Emergency Nursing and Disaster Training Day to provide trauma training to senior 2 nursing students. The Air-Evac team provides educational services to area schools and programs, and also acts as a mobile ICU to transport patients. The continued partnership with Air-Evac will allow the School of Nursing to offer students Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support certification.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>Allen E. Paulson College of Engineering and Information Technology<\/h2>\n<p><strong>80 Engineering Students Pass CSWA Exam<\/strong><br \/>\nEighty students in the Mechanical Engineering SolidWorks 3D Modeling course passed the Certified SolidWorks Associate (CSWA) exam. The exam provides a certificate recognized industry-wide and automatically registers holders in an international database as design associates, making their credentials verifiable to the public. To become certified, students must score 165 or better. The CSWA exam is used to quantify students\u2019 ability to perform tasks associated with 3D modeling, and allows users to design, test and produce drawings through SolidWorks, an advanced drafting, analysis and editing program.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Department Chair Receives Patriot Award<\/strong><br \/>\nDepartment of Literature and Philosophy Chair David Dudley, Ph.D., was presented with the Patriot Award by the Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve Organization after being nominated by philosophy major and active duty military member Staff Sgt. Amber Augustine. The Patriot Award is presented to employers or supervisors who are supportive and understanding of servicemembers\u2019 special needs, including flexible schedule requirements, as well as time off prior to and after deployment. Augustine nominated Dudley for the award for his unwavering support of her education while she serves our country.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>Jiann-Ping Hsu College of Public Health<\/h2>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/ww2.georgiasouthern.edu\/news\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/CollegeNews-3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-1800\" src=\"http:\/\/ww2.georgiasouthern.edu\/news\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/CollegeNews-3-315x472.jpg\" alt=\"CollegeNews-3\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a>A New Honor for Karl E. Peace<\/strong><br \/>\nKarl E. Peace, Ph.D., professor of biostatistics and founder of the Karl E. Peace Center for Biostatistics at Georgia Southern, was presented the Sellers-McCroan Award during the 85th Annual Meeting and Conference of the Georgia Public Health Association in Atlanta in March. He was recognized for his lifelong commitment to improving public health through academia and laboratory advancements. The event program noted that \u201chis national leadership has raised the visibility of both Georgia and Georgia Southern.\u201d<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>College of Education<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Undergraduate Researchers Participate in Conferences<\/strong><br \/>\nFor the first time, research by student-teacher candidates has been accepted for presentation at two regional and one national conferences. Kymberly Drawdy, a professor in the Department of Teaching and Learning said, \u201cbeing able to conduct and use research is so important for teacher development and for pre-service teachers\u2019 impact on P-12 learning. The outcomes for the students in the classroom and the pre-service teachers were better than we anticipated and having the research accepted for presentation at a national conference is another indication of the value and importance of undergraduate research.\u201d Drawdy, along with Professor Meca Williams-Johnson in the Department of Curriculum, Foundations and Reading, and Clinical Instructor Kathleen Tootle in the Department of Teaching and Learning, developed an action research project as part of coursework in the teacher education program.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>College of Business Administration<\/h2>\n<p><strong>New Publication<\/strong><br \/>\nThe College of Business Administration (COBA) published its first <em>Eagle Executive<\/em> magazine this spring. The new magazine replaces the newspaper format that was started in 1986. The <em>Eagle Executive<\/em> will be distributed twice each year, in both March and September.
