The University System of Georgia officially approved the elevation of the University Honors Program into the Honors College in November.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt is a natural progression of success when a university elevates their Honors Program to a college&nbsp;\u2014&nbsp;recognizing and expanding the opportunities for our highest-achieving students,\u201d said Georgia Southern President Kyle Marrero.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ww2.georgiasouthern.edu\/news\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/DSC5163-min.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-8305\" width=\"222\" height=\"259\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ww2.georgiasouthern.edu\/news\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/DSC5163-min.jpg 365w, https:\/\/ww2.georgiasouthern.edu\/news\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/DSC5163-min-315x369.jpg 315w, https:\/\/ww2.georgiasouthern.edu\/news\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/DSC5163-min-85x100.jpg 85w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 222px) 100vw, 222px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Focusing on professional development, interdisciplinary education and global experiences, the Honors College provides enhanced learning opportunities, access to smaller classes and enriching seminars. Steven Engel, Ph.D., will serve as the dean of the Honors College, which is open to students in any major. The new college also prioritizes members of the military with a goal of becoming the most military-friendly honors college in the&nbsp;nation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Honors education began at Georgia Southern in 1982, with the founding of the Bell Honors Program. The University Honors Program was established on the Armstrong campus in 1996 and on the Statesboro campus in 1998.
