Georgia Southern Museum Celebrates Re-accreditation Jan. 31

Georgia Southern University’s museum will celebrate its re-accreditation with a special ceremony Monday, Jan. 31, 2011 at 10 a.m. in the museum’s main exhibit hall.

The Georgia Southern University Museum is one of only 14 museums (out of more than 300) in the state of Georgia to be accredited by the American Association of Museums. The University was originally accredited in 1999, and every ten years must undergo a re-accreditation process. On Monday, Georgia Southern University President Brooks Keel and Georgia Southern Museum Director Brent Tharp will be presented with the re-accreditation. A thank-you reception will follow the brief presentation.

“The process of re-accreditation by the American Association of Museums has been a long and intensive one for the staff of the museum, but well worth the effort. We are very proud to be among the select group of museums nationally that have reviewed every aspect of their operations to ensure that we continue to be an exceptional resource for our community and leaders in our field,” said Tharp.

The Georgia Southern Museum plays a vital role in the southeast Georgia community. The museum hosts thousands of visitors each year, including numerous school groups who use the museum exhibits to enhance the lessons taught in the classroom. The Museum’s school outreach programs, Project SENSE & Project BESST, deliver science and social studies kits to public and private schools throughout southeast Georgia. These programs reach an additional 8,000 students in classrooms with hands-on activities coordinated to state and national standards.
