Block Party Kicks Off First Home Football Game of 2011 Season

Block Party Kicks Off First Home Football Game of 2011 Season

Football season is almost here, and the Georgia Southern campus is buzzing with anticipation. Traditions Council is hosting the year’s first Block Party in front of the University Store from 6:30 to 8 p.m., Sept. 9.  All Georgia Southern fans are invited to attend and support Georgia Southern Athletics and our football team as they begin the 2011 season.

In an effort to encourage more student and community involvement, Eagle Rallies have transitioned into Block Parties and will be held on Friday evenings before rival games. Block Parties will maintain the Eagle Rally aspect, with several new additions including a free cookout and a DJ. By lengthening the event, students will have more opportunity to interact with peers, administration, athletics and the community.

Special appearances at the Block Party include student athletes, GUS, the Georgia Southern cheerleaders and the Southern Pride Marching Band. Additionally, Traditions Council is offering several giveaways to guests. Attendees will also have the opportunity to appear on live television. WTOC 11 in Savannah will host a live broadcast of their Tailgate Show adjacent to the Block Party.

“The transition from Eagle Rallies to Block Parties will give the student body an informal opportunity to socialize, have a great time, and learn about traditions while celebrating Georgia Southern Athletics,” said Carter Walton, assistant director for the Office of Student Activities.

Traditions Council is hosting additional Block Parties on October 14 in front of the University Store, before the Georgia Southern vs. Furman game and on November 4 on Sweetheart Circle, before the Georgia Southern vs. The Citadel Homecoming game. Block Parties are sponsored by the Office of Student Activities, the Traditions Council, Georgia Southern Athletics, the Residence Hall Association, The University Store and Eagle Dining Services.
