SOAR Team Wins Regional Awards

Georgia Southern University’s SOAR Team has earned three regional awards from the Southern Regional Orientation Workshop (SROW).

A regional conference through the National Orientation Directors Association, SROW was attended by nearly 2,000 undergraduate orientation leaders, graduate students and orientation professionals from 100 institutions across the Southeast to learn about other orientation programs, student leadership, teamwork, diversity and acceptance, student and family transition and showcase school pride. 

Georgia Southern University’s SOAR team won the following awards at the conference recently:

• 1st Place – Most Outstanding Educational Session for All Participants Category
  Georgia Southern staff and Carrie Zimmerman, collegiate consultant, presented an educational session titled Creating a Civil Campus in an Uncivil World, which highlights Who Will You Be?, a session presented to freshmen attending a two-day orientation session over the summer. 
  
  
• 2nd Place - Most Outstanding Educational Session for All Participants Category
  SOAR leaders Demetrius Harper, Michaela Lariscy, Caroline McLean, Amber Montrose and Shannin Wright presented an educational session called Sometimes Second Is Best, highlighting how universities can instill school spirit in their students during orientation.
  
  
• 3^rd Place - Community Service Project Category
  The SOAR team donated over 1,200 school supplies to Operation Homefront North Carolina’s Back to School Brigade, a program that strives to provide school supplies to needy children who have at least one parent deployed overseas.

SOAR is the University’s orientation, advisement and registration program for new students and the 2012 SOAR Team is made up of 24 undergraduate student leaders who help orient new students and their families to Georgia Southern during the summer SOAR sessions. SOAR leaders serve as role models for new students by helping them register for classes, preparing them for college level academics and informing parents about Georgia Southern services.
