Student Affairs and Enrollment Management Earns National Recognition

Georgia Southern University’s Office of Student Leadership and Civic Engagement and the Multicultural Student Center have earned Excellence Awards from the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators (NASPA).

The Office of Student Leadership and Civic Engagement earned a Bronze Award in the Student Activities, Student Union and Leadership category for their Leadership in the Workplace Seminar submitted by Dr. Todd Deal. A non-credit course taken in conjunction with a student's internship and designed to identify and develop a student’s key Emotional Intelligence (EI) skill sets, the seminar offers students the ability to understand the EI concept, assess and develop their own skill sets while interning over the course of an academic semester.

The Multicultural Student Center won a Silver Award in the International, Multicultural, Cultural, Gender, LGBTQ, Spirituality and Disability category for their Pathways to Success - African American Male Initiative submission by Dr. Consuela Ward.

Pathways to Success is a benchmark mentoring program developed to increase the retention, persistence and graduation rates of African-American male students. Designed to enhance the entire college life experience, maximizing academic and co-curricular experiences, the program offers positive mentorship and guidance, campus engagement opportunities and activities that promote academic success. Pathways to Success is measured quantitatively by the participants’ GPA, retention and graduation rates and qualitatively by their stories of success.

“I am so very proud of the hard work and dedication of our professional staff to build innovative programming for our students that has resulted in this prestigious national recognition,” says Dr. Teresa Thompson, vice president for Student Affairs and Enrollment Management. “It is a testament to the University community that our successful student-centered culture remains a top priority.”

Georgia Southern University will be recognized at the 13^th NASPA Annual Conference this month.
