Georgia Southern University To Host Annual Haunted Forest
Georgia Southern University’s Center for Addiction Recovery will host the annual Haunted Forest from 8 p.m. to midnight, Oct. 24-27 and Oct. 29-31. This fun event brings together all people from the community to enjoy the Halloween spirit. The Haunted Forest begins with the trail on Malecki Road, right next to the soccer field and the Georgia Southern water tower.
The Haunted Forest activities will feature six “scare stations” along the trail: body-snatching witches, a twisted insane asylum, demonic clowns, a Zombie Formal, militant cannibals, a classic werewolf and vampire section, and other creepy surprises lurking in the forest. New this year to the event is live music provided by the Statesboro Music Festival featuring performances from Connor Fletcher, Evensong, Sam Sniper, Ogeechee River Mud and other artists on Oct. 26, 27 and 31.
The history of the Haunted Forest dates back to 1980, when Georgia Southern Recreation and Leisure Studies Professor “Mouse” Blankenbaker launched the event for the first time. Blankenbaker hosted the event with the help of the students in her Planning Program class. The forest was a phenomenal success and continued to be an annual occurrence until her retirement in 2003. In October 2009, the Center for Addiction Recovery resurrected the event after a six-year break.
Georgia Southern student organizations including Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity, the Gay and Straight Alliance, FYE classes, MAP Nursing students and members from the club baseball team are volunteering their assistance at this year’s event. Community organizations supporting the Haunted Forest include Willingway Hospital, the RIP House, Communities Mobilizing for Change on Alcohol (CMCA) and the Boys and Girls Club of Bulloch County.
The Haunted Forest is open to the public from Oct. 24-27 and Oct. 29-31. The event is closed on Sunday, Oct. 28. Admission is $5 per person, and group discounts are offered. Free parking is available at Allen E. Paulson Stadium.
