Staff Council Seeking to Fill Eight New Seats This Fall
If you’re a non-faculty employee at Georgia Southern University, Staff Council exists for you. This fall, the council has eight seats becoming available on the committee, and if you’re interested in serving your peers and helping to enhance employee morale through increased communication and social and professional development events, you may want to consider gaining a seat.
Comprised of 13 appointed members and four at-large members,
Staff Council serves as the representative body for all staff employees at the
University. Appointed members are selected by their individual Vice President,
while at-large members are nominated and elected by a majority vote of peer
staff members. The council strives to be a voice in decision making on matters
that concern staff and works to ensure employees work in a positive, respectful
atmosphere with opportunities for their own professional and personal growth
and development, while supporting the mission of Georgia Southern University.
Marc “Bo” Galvin, general manager of the on-campus Chick-Fil-A is currently a member. “I enjoy serving because it is an opportunity to interact and meet fellow staff from other departments and areas on campus in which your daily work paths might not cross. We are able to help promote development on campus and fully understand how all staff come together to make the University operate like a well-oiled machine,” he said.
Members of staff council must be a benefited exempt or non-exempt staff employee and must have completed at least one year of employment. In addition, members will commit to serve a two-year term beginning August 1 and should possess a team-oriented mentality for hosted events. Serving on Staff Council may require extra time away from the normal workspace, therefore, members must have their supervisors' approval.
The council holds monthly meetings on the third Friday of
each month from 8:30 - 10:30 a.m. Other meetings may be called based on University
needs.
If you’d be interested in serving on Staff Council, contact a current member
for details.
