A Day for Southern Kicks Off August 22

Georgia Southern faculty and staff will soon have the opportunity to give back to the University through the annual ‘A Day for Southern’ on-campus campaign, which kicks off on Aug. 22.

This year’s on-campus efforts are being led by staff co-chair America Minc and faculty co-chair Stephen Rossi, who are both working to encourage all faculty and staff to donate to the campaign that provides support to University programs not funded through state dollars like scholarships, faculty development, championship athletics and cultural programs.

It is important for faculty and staff to participate in the campaign, Minc said, because the campaign isn’t solely about giving money, but building and sustaining Georgia Southern’s future, as well as building on the University’s reputation of excellence.

“‘A Day for Southern’ is critical to the success of this institution, to our legacy and to our community,” Minc said. “These donations are seen across the Eagle Nation in the form of scholarships provided to students to achieve academic excellence, outreach centers such as the Wildlife Center, the Museum and the Garden of the Coastal Plain that enrich our community, and state-of-the-art facilities and programs that attract and support research and scholarships.”

Rossi agreed on the importance of ‘A Day for Southern’ to the University’s future. He also noted faculty and staff can choose to support a specific area at the University, which will allow them to feel even better about their donations.

“Faculty and staff have the option to designate their donation to the areas of the University they are connected to,” he said. “This will hopefully allow employees, their families and their colleagues to participate in certain events that may not be possible without the funds donated during ‘A Day for Southern,’” he said.

According to Director of Annual Giving Alex Grovenstein, last year 44 departments had 100 percent participation during the on-campus “A Day for Southern” campaign.

“Faculty and staff participation in the campaign is higher than at any of our peer institutions, so that is definitely a point of pride for us,” he said.”Additionally, we have outstanding volunteers in each of our departments that help make ‘A Day for Southern’ possible, so we are very thankful for their efforts.”
